Dragons and Fire Vie for Victory
The Aspray Chester Deeside Dragons are excited to announce their participation in an all new Welsh Cup challenge starting in the 24-25 season!
Not content with bringing fans 18 home games this season, the Dragons are adding another one in the form of a battle across the North-South Wales divide to finally decide which part of Wales is superior! With the news that our friends at the Cardiff Fire have stepped up to the NIHL1 South Division this season, the Dragons are fighting Fire with fire, as they get ready to take on their South Wales counterparts in a two game series, with the winner to be declared the victor of the Cwpan Cymru!
On the creation of the Welsh Cup, GM Shaun Bebbington said, “Sharing the ice with another proud Welsh team the Cardiff Fire is something new and exciting for the Dragons! The chance to play at the Vindico Arena after welcoming the Fire to the Den will be amazing for both sets of players and fans.
To play for the Welsh Cup will add compete and excitement to the games. Since returning to action after the COVID-19 pandemic, the Fire have supported the Dragons return to the ice by loaning us Cedric, Dylan and Lewis as they stepped up to support us in the 22-23 season. This will never be forgotten by the Dragons family as all three lads became fan favourites in their time with us.
Both clubs have formed a friendship and we look out and encourage each other throughout the season. We are hopeful the Welsh Cup becomes a success and an annual competition. I hope the fans are as excited as we are, as it has been a very long time since North and South Wales have played ice hockey against each other!”
The first game will be down at the Den as we welcome the visitors to North Wales on September 7th, with the away leg later that month on the 28th. Tickets will be on sale soon, and please note that season tickets do not cover this fixture, but will receive 20% off any tickets they do purchase for this fixture.
