The Deeside Dragons pulled off an incredible comeback to lift the 2024 Welsh Cup in Cardiff on Saturday night, winning 11-9 in a roller-coaster match against Cardiff Fire. The Dragons got off to a rough start, conceding four goals within the first ten minutes, leaving the score at a daunting 4-0. However, a late surge in the first period saw the Dragon’s claw back with two crucial goals from players #12 and #55, ending the period 4-2 in favor of Cardiff. The momentum shifted in the second period as the Dragons found their stride, scoring four times through #55, #33, #55 again, and #12. Cardiff Fire managed just one goal in response, with the Dragons taking a narrow 6-5 lead heading into the third period.
The final period was a goal fest, with both sides going all out. Deeside’s #55 and #33 quickly found the net before #13 and #12 (twice) further extended their lead, with Cardiff scoring five goals of their own to keep the pressure on. The Dragons’ flurry of goals built a commanding lead at 10-5 before the Fire fought back, closing the gap to 10-8. The Dragons answered with another strike to make it 11-8, and though Cardiff notched a late goal to bring it to 11-9, the Dragons held on for the win and the Welsh Cup title. Club GM Shaun Bebbington hailed the victory, saying, “This win means everything to the club, the community, and Welsh ice hockey as a whole. It shows the strength and passion we have at Deeside, and it’s a testament to the hard work of everyone involved, from the players to the fans. It’s not just a trophy; it’s a symbol of what we can achieve together and a boost for the sport across Wales.” Bebbington also thanked Cardiff Fire for their part in making the return of the Welsh Cup special and showcasing the sport.
Fans can catch the Deeside Dragons and the Welsh Cup in person at their next home game on Sunday, 6th October, against the Sheffield Scimitars, with a face-off at 5:15 PM and doors opening at 4:30 PM for what is sure to be an electric atmosphere.
