The Aspray Chester Deeside Dragons picked up their first win of the season this weekend with a convincing 4-1 win over the Solihull Barons, where Deeside had four different goal scorers and nine different Dragons on the scoresheet in total.
RETURNING FACES
The Dragons welcomed back James Shaw and Andy McKinney, both making their regular season debuts with the team with style, collecting an assist each on the opening goal and the game winning goal, respectively.
THE OPPONENTS
The Dragons had yet to face Solihull this season, but last season played one of their best games against them with a 10-3 win at home. The Barons were 2-1 going into the weekend.
THE GAME
It was a dominant first period from the Dragons in the Den, as they peppered the Barons goalie with 16 shots, scoring on two of them, including a power play goal from Ross Kennedy that almost blew a hole through Laverick’s catcher, and Chris Jones’ first of the season from James Shaw and Billy Perks. The second period was a little more balanced, as the Barons started to find their feet, and their captain, Niklas Ottoson, scored on a shorthanded breakaway to make it 2-1. The Dragons held on to take that scoreline into the third period, and we welcomed back the dominant team from the first period, as they added two more goals from Alex Parry and Brodie Jesson for a convincing team win to put the Dragons in the win column.
Goaltender Matt Croyle was exceptional, making 27 of 28 saves and earning his MVP nod, and the penalty kill was also very strong, not conceding on seven PKs, including a minute of 5 on 3.
