About the Dragons

The Dragons are a Deeside based semi-professional ice hockey team. Since reforming from the dissolved Flintshire Freeze, we have played out of the Deeside
ice rink, located in the Deeside leisure centre. The Dragons are a volunteer run team that relies on donations and sponsorship to provide the very best hockey Flintshire has to offer. Since the COVID-19 pandemic required the ice rink to become first a field hospital and then a vaccination clinic, the Dragons haven’t had a home since the NIHL season was cancelled in March 2020, but in October, we are returning to the Den even stronger than before. This upcoming season we will be taking part in
the NIHL (National Ice Hockey League) in an attempt to bring an even higher quality of hockey to the community.

As a team, we spend a lot of time trying to help the community as best we can. In our most recent season (19-20) we had three special charity games; we held a toy collection at Christmas for a local children’s hospital, an Easter egg collection for local food banks and emergency services, and our teddy bear toss that season supported NCAR, a local animal rescue. Next season we are looking to repeat these games as well as add more charity games, as it is important to us to support the community that has supported us for over 40 years. The Dragons are committed to our passionate fan-base and the surrounding businesses, and are looking to work with local businesses as often as we can. Hockey is a family sport, and we consider all our players, volunteers, fans, and sponsors a part of the Dragons family, no matter who you are!

“Deeside Dragons Ice Hockey team have a long history of ice hockey here in Deeside from the early incarnations in 1974 to the present day. The teams have enjoyed the highs and lows of promotion and being league champions to the lows of relegation and having to take temporary hiatus while their rink became a Covid Vaccination centre during the pandemic. The Deeside Dragons are now gearing up and ready to regain their home and bring live ice hockey back to the area. This is a time for Deeside and North East Wales to come together and support the Dragons and give our area something to shout about and be proud of. I fully support them in achieving success in this new era.”

“I am so excited to welcome everyone back to the Den this autumn, as the Dragons have returned to breathe some life into the Flintshire community. I am confident that this will be one of the strongest Dragons teams we have seen in recent memory, and I hope everyone is looking forward to the start of the season as much as I am! The Dragons can’t wait to give back to the fan base and the local community that supported us through the last two years of not having a home, and we can’t wait for you all to join us as we return to the National Ice Hockey League”
